Domaine de l’Horizon was formed in 2005 by Thomas Teibert and Joachim Christ, joining the ranks of prolific wineries such as Domaine Gauby and Domaine Matassa. Calce, a small village in the foothills of the Pyrenees, is fast becoming renowned for its varied soil and old vines. The Domaine consists of 17 hectares situated on a hillside, its name inspired by a beautiful outlook towards the Mediterranean. The calcareous soil is good for water retention during (frequent) periods of low rainfall. Joachim is quick to explain that despite the hot summers there is often an ocean breeze: nearby winery Clos des Fées even named one of its wines La Petite Siberie due to the cool wind on the plot where it was grown, where locals seek refuge on hot days.
Mar i Muntanya 2019 was originally planned as a blend of ⅔ Syrah and ⅓ Grenache Noir. A particularly low yield of Grenache Noir, however, meant it became destined solely for rosé and the missing percentage was replaced with Carignan. This is a fun, juicy wine, fermented in whole bunches and aged for 8 months; 65% in concrete tanks and the rest in oak barrels. ‘Mar i Muntanya’ means ‘Sea and Mountain’, a reference to the winery’s stunning location. Plenty of fresh red berries in this one. Drink slightly chilled with Catalan cheese and charcuterie.
