Moritz Kissinger
2023
Null Ohm Rot
Pinot Noir
Rheinhessen, Germany

Moritz Kissinger and his father, Jürgen, farm around 13 hectares in the Rhine valley, with a focus on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Riesling. After studying at Geisenheim, Moritz returned to Uelversheim and to the family estate, where he quickly built a reputation not only for his fresh, mineral whites and reds, but for his Sekt. The vineyards are spread out, with some parcels based around Uelversheim and the rest unfolding south from Oppenheim towards Guntersblum along the bank of the Rhine. These plots offer a diversity of terroir, with more dense and heavy soils in Uelversheim and chalkier soils towards the river. Mortiz and Jürgen converted to organic farming in 2015, strengthening the ecosystem in the vineyards by encouraging diversity and increasing the level of humus in the soil. They work with a deep commitment to regenerative agriculture, supporting their soil with cover crops, compost and a ‘no till’ philosophy. The compost is made from pomace (the solids left after grape pressing), cow manure and grass cuttings, heaped in small piles. These are turned frequently, feeding oxygen to the sensitive microorganisms within which are essential to the development of healthy compost.

Null Ohm rot 2023 is made with 100% Pinot Noir, differing from earlier iterations of this wine which were made with Dornfelder and Merlot, or Dornfelder and Pinot Noir. A juicy wine that maintains a serious quality, and an exciting young expression of Pinot Noir. Red berries meet hibiscus and great energy, enjoy slightly chilled.
