Bangarang Nouveau
Pineau d’Aunis, Chenin Blanc
Loire, France

Agnès and René Mosse arrived in Anjou in 1999. The couple previously ran a wine bar in Tours where they met vignerons from the Loire such as Christian Chaussard and Francois Chidaine, slowly becoming immersed in the wine world. After training in Amboise, Touraine and Burgundy, Agnès and René found a 9.5 hectare estate in Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay, just south of the Loire river. Vineyards in Anjou were affordable compared to appellations René was familiar with in his region, Touraine, and offered terroir on which one could grow both white and red grapes, but there was a big disadvantage: it had a bad reputation for wine. Over the last decade or so, winemakers like Agnès and René have played an important part in the evolution of this region. They arrived to vines that had undergone three generations of chemical agriculture but, parcel by parcel, they introduced organic viticulture and by 2001 everything was being farmed biodynamically. In 2018, sons Sylvestre and Joseph took over the estate, which has steadily become renowned for high quality wines and great Chenins grown on schist. In general the terroir is shale and sandstone with some surface clay, and grape varieties include Chardonnay, Côt, Cabernet Franc, Grolleau noir and gris, and Gamay. The brothers have added an import and distribution dimension to the winery, trading wines they discovered during their travels abroad, as well as creating a selection of new Mosse wines — including the Beaujolais Nouveau style ‘Bangarang’.

Bangarang Nouveau ’23 is a fresh, lively and juicy young wine, bottled at the end of October and bursting with redcurrant. A wet and muggy harvest gave a high yield, with the grapes soaking up plenty of water. 70% Pineau d’Aunis and 30% Chenin Blanc, grown on clay over schist, were direct pressed and fermented in vats. Candy pink in colour and a great match for charcuterie, drink at around 9°.
